Oil Rubbed Patina is designed to develop a medium brown finish on bronze, brass, and copper. Normal colours will range from golden to dark almost black-brown. Supplied as a ready to use formula. Oil Rubbed Patina does not need to be diluted, but instead applied directly to the clean metal surface. If a lighter colour is desired, distilled water can be used for dilution. Normal dilution could be 1:1, 2:1, or 3:1 (patina to distilled water). A test should be conducted to find which dilution works for your project.
It is a slow to react brown patina that typically takes two coats to get the deeper tones shown in the guide book. Oil Rubbed Patina can also be used in a submerge or bath application. Full strength will result in more of a black finish while dilution with distilled water will net more brown colours in the finish. Oil Rubbed is designed to be used as a cold process. This patina leaves a green like brown on bronze, brass, and copper metal coating. Heavy applications on metal coatings can result in a white like film on the surface.
Directions:
Use in a well ventilated area. Always wear goggles or face shield, vapor respirator, protective clothing, and gloves when handling the product. Store between 10-32*C.
1. Clean the metal with Sculpt Nouveau Metal Cleaner and a scotch-brite pad, rinse with water after a few minutes. For more consistent and better reactions, sanding or sandblasting is recommended. Cleaning the surface is mandatory after sanding or handling with bare hands. DO NOT use Acetone or apply any solvent based cleaners.
2. Apply Oil-Rubbed Patina to the metal surface by brush, sponge, roll or spray bottle. Which ever option you choose will react with the surface, but it may show characteristics based on application method. Spraying is the most common method. Normal reaction time is 3-5 minutes, though shorter or longer times will vary depending on climate variables, dilution rates, and desired finished colour. Do not allow the patina to dry on the surface.
3. Rinse the patina with distilled water to neutralize the acid and stop the reaction. You must also remove the excess film developed by the patina. While rinsing, rub softly with a micro fibre towel or sponge. Dry with clean white paper towels as soon as you are done rinsing.
4. Re-apply the patina as needed to achieve a darker or more uniform finish. Follow steps 2-4 if needed.
5. Heat the metal with a torch or heat gun to evaporate excess water in the metal. Then apply desired clear coat such as Clear Guard or Ever Clear.
